Scope:Help on this term

Public housing refers to dwellings owned (or leased) and managed by state and territory housing authorities. It is accessed by those on low income and/or with special needs.

Low income households of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent are additionally eligible to apply for state-owned housing managed by government housing authorites and allocated to Indigenous tenants.

Included are households residing in PH & SOMIH dwellings where the dwelling is either:

  • owned by the state/territory housing authority; or
  • head-leased from private market or other housing program areas and managed by the state/territory housing authority for provision of public housing.

The PH & SOMIH data set specification excludes dwellings:

  • owned but not administered by the state/territory housing authority (for example, dwellings leased to other program areas, such as community housing or crisis and emergency accommodation programs)
  • no longer under the administration of the state/territory housing authority at 30 June of the reference period (including dwellings demolished, sold or otherwise disposed of); and
  • not yet available to the state/territory housing authority at 30 June of the reference period (including those still under construction or being purchased).
