Metadata management

Metadata management involves ensuring metadata meets agreed standards. Well-constructed, current metadata are needed to enable data users, creators, and owners to have a common understanding of the meaning and representation of their data. Good metadata clearly and accurately describe the data, what the data mean, and how they are collected. Metadata development involves the creation of standard descriptions and contexts for data, and keeping the metadata up to date. Registration authorities review and endorse these standards.

This section contains information about how data standards are managed, viewed and endorsed, and about registration authorities for the various sectors. Registration statuses of metadata items have been updated in 2022, and this page shows how past statuses map to the new ones.
