Description:Help on this term

Number of Indigenous babies born within the previous 12 months whose birthweight has been recorded at the primary health-care service.

Rationale:Help on this term

Low birthweight (newborn babies weighing less than 2,500 grams) is associated with an increased risk of ill health and is related to higher mortality within the first year of life. Low birthweight is a particular issue for Indigenous Australians. Recording birthweight encourages the provision of appropriate care to limit the negative associations of low birthweight.
