Description:Help on this term

Proportion of Indigenous babies born within the previous 12 months whose birthweight has been recorded at the primary health-care service.

Rationale:Help on this term

Low birthweight (newborn babies weighing less than 2,500 grams) is associated with an increased risk of ill health and is related to a higher mortality within the first year of life. Low birthweight is a particular issue for Indigenous Australians. Recording birthweight encourages the provision of appropriate care to limit the negative associations of low birthweight.
