METEOR identifier: | 782744 |
Registration status: | Indigenous, Superseded 25/02/2024 |
Description: | Proportion of Indigenous regular clients aged 15–34 who were tested for one or more sexually transmissible infections (STIs) (chlamydia and/or gonorrhoea) within the previous 12 months. |
Rationale: | Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are at higher risk of contracting STIs and blood born viruses (BBVs), particularly if living in remote and very remote communities. Best Practice Guidelines recommend that Indigenous Australians be screened for chlamydia and gonorrhoea annually. An increase in the number of people tested annually for STIs will identify asymptomatic infections. Early detection, if the STI is treated, will reduce the time a person is infectious and therefore assist in reducing transmission rates. It will also reduce the likelihood of complications or adverse outcomes to the individual. |
