Population group age from:Help on this termThis indicator uses a number of different population group age lower bounds:
  • For infants: Less than 1 year of age
  • For children aged 1-4 years: 1 year of age
  • For children aged 0-4 years: Less than 1 year of age
  • Population group age to:Help on this termThis indicator uses a number of different population group age upper bounds:
  • For infants: Less than 1 year of age
  • For children aged 1-4 years: Less than 5 years of age
  • For children aged 0-4 years: Less than 5 years of age
  • Computation:Help on this termInfants: 1,000 x (Numerator ÷ Denominator)

    Children: 100,000 x (Numerator ÷ Denominator)

    Total 0–4 year olds: 100,000 x (Numerator ÷ Denominator)

    Accountability attributes

Reporting requirements:Help on this termNational Healthcare Agreement
Organisation responsible for providing data:Help on this termAustralian Bureau of Statistics (with input from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare on the data quality statement).
Benchmark:Help on this termNational Partnership Agreement (NPA) on Closing the Gap in Indigenous Health Outcomes: Halve the gap in mortality rates for Indigenous children under 5 within a decade.
Further data development / collection required:Help on this termSpecification: Long-term
Indigenous identification needs improvement in mortality and births data and the underlying Indigenous population estimates also need improvement.
Other issues caveats:Help on this termDisaggregation by Indigenous status, remoteness area and SEIFA of residence within individual states/territories is subject to data quality considerations. Some disaggregations may result in numbers too small for publication.

Disaggregation by Indigenous status is to be reported using a 3 or 5 year rolling average.

Further details (including data for 2002–06) are available from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Performance Framework (Indicator 1.19).
