Description:Help on this termMortality rates and excess deaths for Australians for the leading causes of death, (ICD-10 causes of death) by Indigenous status.
Rationale:Help on this termAchieving the Closing the Gap target of closing the life expectancy gap within a generation requires monitoring mortality rates for different diseases so that it is understood which diseases are major contributors to mortality among Indigenous Australians and where programs are succeeding and where they are not.

Collection and usage attributes

Computation description:Help on this termThere are two measures for this indicator:

Measure (1a): Mortality rates for Australians by the leading causes of death, by Indigenous status

Measure (1b): Excess deaths for Indigenous Australians by the leading causes of death

Crude and age standardised rates, rate ratios and rate differences are presented.

Computation:Help on this termRate: 100,000 x (Numerator ÷ Denominator)

Excess deaths: Observed number of Indigenous deaths less expected number of Indigenous deaths if the age specific rates of the non-Indigenous population were applied to the Indigenous population.

Numerator:Help on this termNumber of registered deaths

Comments:Help on this termRequired disaggregation: By leading cause of death: National, sex and selected states/territories by Indigenous status

Recommended disaggregation: By leading cause of death: National, by sex by Indigenous status; selected states and territories by Indigenous status

Most recent data available for 2010 CRC baseline report: 2007

At this stage, only data from selected state/territories are considered of acceptable quality for reporting mortality of Indigenous persons (NSW, Qld, WA, SA & NT).
Due to small number of Indigenous deaths reported each year, 5 year combined data will be reported.

Further data development / collection required:Help on this termSpecification: Long-term

The statistical agencies and state/territory governments are currently working with Registrars and funeral directors and doctors to improve the quality of Indigenous status information on death notification forms and death certificates.

Indigenous identification needs improvement in deaths data.
Other issues caveats:Help on this term

Disaggregation by Indigenous status is Indigenous Australians and other Australians (Non-Indigenous and not stated Indigenous status).

Rates are indirectly age-standardised to the Australian Estimated Resident Population as at June 30 2001.

Numbers will be too small to report by cause of death in some states and territories.
