Short name:![]() | AHPF PI 3.1.1–Incidence of heart attacks (acute coronary events), 2024 |
METEOR identifier:![]() | 794349 |
Registration status:![]() | Health, Qualified 28/06/2024 |
Description:![]() | Incidence of acute coronary events (acute myocardial infarction and unstable angina). |
Rationale:![]() | Acute coronary events are a form of coronary heart disease, which is one of the leading causes of disease burden in Australia. Monitoring the incidence of acute coronary events provides a measure of the burden of acute coronary heart disease in the population and informs health service planning. |
Collection and usage attributes | |
Population group age from:![]() | 25 years |
---|---|
Computation description:![]() | Rates are age-specific rates or directly age standardised to the 2001 Australian population. |
Computation:![]() | (Numerator ÷ Denominator) × 100,000 |
Numerator:![]() | The number of deaths recorded with an underlying cause of acute coronary heart disease (a) plus the number of non-fatal hospitalisations with a principal diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction or unstable angina that do not end in death or a transfer to another acute hospital (b). For ages 25 years and over. |
Numerator data elements:![]() | |
Denominator:![]() | Total population aged 25 years and over for calendar year in question. |

Comments:![]() | Most recent data available for 2024 Australian Health Performance Framework: 2021. This indicator is a measure of the number of acute coronary events in a calendar year. An individual may have more than one event during a year. The criteria used to identify acute coronary events in the hospitalisation and deaths data are to minimise repeat counting of these events. An individual may have more than one event during a year. Data at the national level, by age group and sex, have previously been published. Data by state/territory of usual residence have been previously published. Caution should be taken when making inter-jurisdictional comparisons. Differences in treatment and referral patterns, and coding practices across jurisdictions are likely to have an impact on administrative records and may affect jurisdictional comparability. Reporting by calendar year using the Admitted patient care NMDS requires compilation of data from 2 financial years (e.g. data for the 2021 calendar year uses Admitted patient care NMDSs for 2020–21 and 2021–22). Deaths registered in 2018 and earlier are based on the final version of cause of death data, deaths registered in 2019 are based on the revised version and deaths registered in 2020 and 2021 are based on the preliminary version. Revised and preliminary versions are subject to further revision by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). The ICD-10 code set represents the disease or injury which is the direct cause of death or the circumstances of the accident or violence which led to death. The ICD-10-AM code set is used to classify diseases, injuries and related health problems. |
