Scope: | The Australian Teacher Workforce Data (ATWD) collection is a repository of several data sets from a range of data providers, containing data from across the lifecycle of teacher training and teaching career. The objective of the ATWD is to build a national picture of the teaching profession. The components of the collection are: 1. Data from the Australian Government’s Tertiary Collection of Student Information (TCSI). This comprises information on students in all higher education programmes for all initial teacher education (ITE), also known as pre-service teacher training, in Australia. 2. Data from Australian state and territory teacher regulatory authorities (TRAs). This comprises information on the registered teacher workforce. The TRAs are the bodies responsible for teacher registration in Australia and provide important workforce registration information that covers all teachers across all sectors, states and territories. 3. Data from the Australian Government’s Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching (QILT) surveys. This includes information on student experience, graduate outcomes, and employer satisfaction for ITE students. 4. Data from the ATWD teacher survey. This is a voluntary self-report questionnaire comprising questions regarding employment arrangements, working hours, time spent on face-to-face teaching and non-teaching tasks, and intentions to remain in the profession. Note: The current metadata available for the ATWD Collection include specifications from the Initial Teacher Education (ITE) and teacher registration components. Metadata for ATWD Reporting, QILT survey and ATWD Teacher survey will gradually be added to the data set specification over time. |

Guide for use: | The Australian Teacher Workforce Data (ATWD) initiative is building the evidence base that will inform the future of the teaching profession. By connecting initial teacher education data and teacher workforce data from across Australia, the ATWD is providing nationally consistent data on subjects like how many teachers we have, how many graduates get jobs, the types of contracts teachers are employed under, teacher career paths and experiences, and how many teachers are entering and leaving the profession. These insights will identify how to better support teachers and their wellbeing, and ensure teachers in schools and early childhood settings can deliver quality learning to everyone. |
Collection methods: | The ATWD initiative is a national project developed as part of the national initial teacher education reforms and is jointly funded by the Australian Government and all state and territory governments. Data for the ATWD is collected annually, and represents the most recent calendar year.

Implementation start date: | 01/07/2018 |
