(a) The number of females who gave birth and reported smoking in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, divided by the total number of females who gave birth with a known smoking status in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, and multiplied by 100.

(b) The number of females who gave birth and reported smoking after the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, divided by the total number of females who gave birth and reported smoking in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, and multiplied by 100.

A birth is defined as the complete expulsion or extraction from a female, of a product of conception of 20 or more completed weeks of gestation or of 400 grams or more birthweight.

Smoking refers to the use of cigarettes or inhaled tobacco.

Data elements are from the Perinatal National Minimum Data Set (NMDS) or have been provided as voluntary non-standardised items by the states and territories. Records with a permissible value have been included in the denominator.

Standardised data collection for smoking in pregnancy commenced for births from July 2010. This will enable reporting against parts (a) among all females who gave birth the proportion who reported smoking tobacco in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, and (b) among all females who gave birth and reported smoking in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, the proportion who reported smoking after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

National Perinatal Data Collection (NPDC) data on smoking status and/or smoking quantity (number of cigarettes smoked) have been collected from New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, and the Australian Capital Territory since 2001, and progressively from all other jurisdictions.
