Guide for use:Help on this term

To calculate parity, count all previous pregnancies that resulted in a live birth or a stillbirth of at least 20 weeks gestation or at least 400 grams birthweight. Excluded from the count are:

  • the current pregnancy
  • pregnancies resulting in spontaneous or induced abortions before 20 weeks gestation
  • ectopic pregnancies.

A primipara (a female giving birth for the first time) has a parity of 0.

Collection methods:Help on this term

A pregnancy with multiple fetuses is counted as one pregnancy.

Comments:Help on this term

The number of previous pregnancies that resulted in a birth is an important component of the female's reproductive history. Parity may be a risk factor for adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes.
