Description:Help on this term

The proportion of households with dependent children (aged 0–14) where someone reports living with a smoker who smokes daily inside the home.

Rationale:Help on this term

Second-hand smoke can cause lung cancer and heart disease deaths to non-smokers. Second-hand smoke can be especially harmful to children's health because their lungs are still developing.

Comments:Help on this term

Most recent data available for 2019 Australian Health Performance Framework reporting: 2016.

Data for 2001, 2004, 2007, 2010 and 2013 were obtained from the AIHW National Drug Strategy Household Survey (NDSHS) run in respect of these years. Similar data elements were used to those listed above for the 2016 NDSHS.

The SEIFA Index of Relative Socio-Economic Disadvantage (IRSD) has been used for this indicator. However, the SEIFA Index of Relative Socio-Economic Advantage and Disadvantage (IRSAD) is usually used for reporting data by socio-economic area in the NDSHS.

Indigenous estimates are not provided because the NDSHS is not specifically designed to obtain reliable national estimates for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. In the 2016 NDSHS 2.4% of the sample (or approximately 568 respondents) identified as being of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander origin. Practicality of the survey design meant that some Aboriginal communities and those with low levels of English literacy were excluded. The exclusion of these communities makes it difficult to generalise the results in the NDSHS to the whole Indigenous population.

Age and sex disaggregations are not available as the data are based on the household, not the respondent.
