Definition: | A narrowly defined group of drugs listed in the Schedule of Pharmaceutical Benefits that are of similar safety and efficacy and provide similar health outcomes, as represented by a code. |
Context: | Therapeutic groups are defined for the purpose of comparative pricing. The government subsidises all drugs within a therapeutic group up to the level of the lowest priced drug. Any difference between the subsidised price and the price of the drug used by the patient is called the 'therapeutic group premium' and is paid by the patient. |
