Self-harm is when a person deliberately inflicts physical harm to themself, often in secret and without anyone else knowing about it. Self-harm is not necessarily a suicide attempt, although it may include suicidal behaviour.

Comments:Help on this term

Entry to prison can be a time of increased vulnerability and risk of suicide or self-harming behaviours. All prisoners upon reception into prison are assessed to identify those at current risk of suicide or self-harm. These prisoners are then provided with closer observation and monitoring.
