Definition: | The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) classification for standard offences. |
Classification structure: | The ANZSOC is a classification with three levels: Divisions (the broadest level), Subdivisions (the intermediate level) and Groups (the finest level). At the divisional level, the main purpose is to provide a limited number of categories that provide a broad overall picture of offence types, that are suitable for the publication of summary tables in official statistics. The subdivision and group levels provide increasingly detailed dissections of these categories for the compilation of more specific and detailed statistics. The structure of the ANZSOC is illustrated below. Level Example Division 09 Drug offences Subdivision 091 International drug trafficking Group 0911 Illegal import of drugs There are 17 divisions numbered 01 to 17. The divisional structure for the fourth edition of ANZSOC is as follows: Division Title 01 Homicide 02 Assault 03 Sexual offences 04 Harm or endanger persons 05 Robbery, blackmail, and extortion 06 Burglary 07 Theft 08 Fraud and related offences 09 Drug offences 10 Weapons and explosives offences 11 Property damage 12 Public order, health and safety offences 13 Traffic and vehicle offences 14 Offences against justice procedures and orders 15 Offences against government 16 Environmental offences 17 Miscellaneous offences |
