Definition:Help on this term

Persons employed (or engaged via contract) on a part-time or full-time paid basis, where the person is specifically employed to provide mental health care support and services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. These mental health professionals have recognised qualifications and/or work experience in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mental health and/or health.

Roles that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mental health workers may perform include, but are not limited to:

  • enhancing accessibility of culturally appropriate mental health services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • active involvement and engagement in the provision of mental health services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, their families and communities
  • Advocating and engaging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the planning, development and evaluation of mental health services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
  • providing advice to colleagues and wider community on culturally appropriate support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in relation to planning and provision of mental health services.
