An impairment rating is assigned if the condition causing the impairment is permanent and more likely than not to persist for more than 2 years.

To determine the level of functional impact of impairment the Social Security (Tables for the Assessment of Work-related Impairment for Disability Support Pension) Determination 2011 is used to assign ratings.
