Calculated based on the capacity of the hospital staff available to provide specialised mental health services for patients within their home. Place of residence can be permanent or temporary. An available bed classified as mental health hospital-in-the-home must meet the definition of hospital-in-the-home care.

The number of available bed-equivalents should be collected at least monthly at the same time on the same day. To improve accuracy data could be collected more frequently (e.g. daily). If so, it should be collected at the same time on each day. More frequent data collection is preferable if a single monthly count is likely to be significantly different from the monthly average.

Staffing of the unit must be consistent with other admitted patient mental health care services. Mental health hospital-in-the-home care is not a substitute for care provided by residential mental health care services or ambulatory mental health care services.

Collection methods:Help on this term

Criteria should exist to ensure that each available bed-equivalent is counted only once.
