METeOR is Australia’s repository for national metadata standards for health, housing and community services statistics and information. METeOR provides users with a suite of online data development features and tools, and access to a wide range of nationally endorsed data definitions.
The national standards for housing and homelessness are developed under the guidance of the Housing and Homelessness Registrar and endorsed by the Housing and Homelessness Information Management Group (HHIMG). HHIMG is responsible for advising the Housing & Homelessness Policy Research Working Group (HHPRWG) on national housing and homelessness matters and HHPRWG, through the HHIMG’s Chair, reports the activities of HHIMG to the Housing Ministers’ Advisory Committee (HMAC).

The development of indicators in METeOR improves quality, relevance, consistency and the availability of national information about the health and welfare of Australians. The drivers for standard development arise from the need for better information - whether it is statistical, administrative, clinical or other information. This ensures the data used in statistics is compatible and it facilitates National and International interoperability. Information management groups and committees in the community services, health and housing assistance sectors have endorsed the use of METeOR for Council of Australian Governments (COAG) performance indicators to ensure compliance with the intergovernmental agreements of a National registry of Performance Indicators.

The National Data Dictionary is a reference on standardised, accepted terms and protocols used for data collection in the Housing and Homelessness sectors. It is a helpful resource for people involved in constructing either survey or administrative data collections and it will help to maximise the consistency and comparability of information about service need, service delivery and service use. The previous data dictionaries for the housing sector can be located in METeOR. It is anticipated a new data dictionary will be released in late 2012.
