Collection and usage attributes

Computation description:Help on this term

Rates directly age-standardised to the 2001 Australian population.

Age group is calculated from age at last contact.

Remoteness is derived from SLA (or postcode where SLA is not available) of the client at last contact and is proportionally allocated using a population-based concordance.

SEIFA is derived from SLA (or postcode where SLA is not available) of the client at last contact and is proportionally allocated using a population-based concordance.

Public

Number of individuals registered on jurisdictional mental health information systems as receiving one or more service contacts from state/territory public mental health services.

Person counts should be confined to individuals who received one or more contacts from the state or territory mental health service and were not, at the time of contact, currently admitted to a specialised mental health inpatient or residential service.

All types of service contacts to be included in defining whether a person receives a service, including those delivered ‘on behalf’ of the consumer, that is, where the consumer does not directly participate.

‘Assessment only’ cases are included.

‘Unregistered’ clients—mental health clients for which a person identifier was not recorded—are excluded.

State and territory disaggregation of community mental health care data is based on location of service.

Private

Number of individuals receiving specialist psychiatric care in private hospitals with psychiatric beds. Services provided to patients with psychiatric diagnoses by other private hospitals (that is, those without designated psychiatric beds) are not included.

State and territory disaggregation of Private Mental Health Alliance data is based on location of service.

Medicare Benefits Scheme

Inclusive of all mental-health related Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) items and includes some ambulatory-equivalent admitted patient mental health service contacts.

Comments:Help on this term

Most recent data available for 2012 CRC report: 2009–10

MBS and DVA item numbers change over time. Extracted data may include historical item numbers that are no longer current but have been processed by Medicare Australia within the reference period.

There is likely to be considerable overlap between the MBS/DVA data and the private hospital data, as most patients accessing private hospital services would access MBS items in association with the private hospital service.
