Rationale:Help on this termSmoking is a major risk factor that contributes to ill health. Indigenous Australians are twice as likely as non-Indigenous Australians to smoke. Reducing the rate of smoking among Indigenous Australians will assist in closing the gap in life expectancy.

Specification: Long-term

Mechanisms for reporting annually in between surveys could be explored.

Reliable data on Indigenous adolescents would be useful. Expanding the National Drug Strategy Household Survey (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare) and the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Indigenous specific surveys would provide sufficiently robust and regular data.
