Guide for use: | Range of 3 to 15. If the Total Glasgow coma score is not collected or recorded, code 99. A total GCS of less than 3 or greater than 15 is set to not recorded. Only use valid codes of 1 to 6 of the eye opening, verbal or motor response components of the Glasgow coma scale. Codes of 9, Not stated/inadequately described, should be excluded from the total score. |

Collection methods: | The total score on Glasgow coma scale is calculated by adding together the three components, eye opening, motor and verbal. The total score on Glasgow coma scale needs to be assessed when the person is free from the effects of sedative and/or paralysing or neuromuscular blocking agents. |
