Description:Help on this term

Proportion of Indigenous babies born within the previous 12 months whose birthweight results were categorised as one of the following:

  • Low (less than 2,500 grams)
  • Normal (2,500 grams to less than 4,500 grams)
  • High (4,500 grams and over).
Rationale:Help on this term

Low birthweight (newborn babies weighing less than 2,500 grams) is associated with an increased risk of ill health and is related to higher mortality within the first year of life. Low birthweight is a particular issue for Indigenous Australians. Recording birthweight encourages the provision of appropriate care to limit the negative associations of low birthweight.
