Collection and usage attributes
Rates directly age-standardised to the 2001 Australian Standard Population.
Analyses by state and territory, remoteness and Socio-Economic Indexes for Areas (SEIFA) Index of Relative Socio-Economic Disadvantage (IRSD) are based on the Statistical Area Level 2 (SA2) of the person at the time of their diagnosis.
Rates that are considered unstable and should be interpreted with caution will be noted. Rates that are considered very unstable will not be published.

Calculated separately for each type of cancer.
For melanoma, bowel and lung cancer: Number of new cases in the reported year.
For cervical and breast cancer in females: Number of new cases in females in the reported year.

Cancer types in these disaggregations comprise: bowel cancer (ICD-10 2016 version codes C18–C20), lung cancer (C33–C34), melanoma of the skin (C43), female breast cancer (C50) and cervical cancer (C53).
Note: The 2015 tables supplied for 2019 National Healthcare Agreement performance reporting did not include data for New South Wales (NSW). These will be resupplied for 2020 performance reporting with the inclusion of NSW data.
Northern Territory data for 2016 is not yet available and is therefore not included in the 2016 tables.
The 2017 tables only include data from those jurisdictions from which it is available: Victoria and Western Australia (WA).
Some disaggregation may result in numbers too small for publication.
Disaggregation by remoteness area is subject to availability of suitable population data.
