  • Consumer experiences of care from public mental health services are vital to inform service quality improvement.
  • Monitoring mental health consumer experiences of service has been a long-term goal of the National Mental Health Strategy. In 2010, under the Fourth National Mental Health Plan, the Australian Department of Health funded the National Consumer Experiences of Care project to investigate the potential for a nationally agreed methodology and measure.

Coverage/Scope:

Under this indicator, a mental health consumer is defined as a person who uses or has used a public mental health service and has responded to the YES survey.

The following state and territory public specialised mental health services are in scope:

The Experience of service score for each respondent converts their average ratings of service from all survey questions into a single score out of 100. The Experience of service indicator is the proportion of mental health consumers with a score equal to or higher than 80 (out of 100) using this index.

Number of returned YES surveys with an Experience of service score equal to or higher than 80.

Experience of service score—The experience of service score for each respondent is equal to the average response of all survey questions multiplied by 20. The resulting overall score converts the individual question responses into a score out of 100.
