Short name: | Indicator 5b-Proportion of patients with knee osteoarthritis prescribed oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) with documented assessment of risks |
METEOR identifier: | 644304 |
Registration status: | Health, Standard 02/08/2017 |
Description: | Proportion of patients with knee osteoarthritis prescribed oral NSAIDs with the risks of gastrointestinal bleeding, cardiovascular disease and renal complications documented in their medical record (paper or electronic). |
Rationale: | Oral NSAIDs are not appropriate for patients with high comorbidity risk (McAlindon et al. 2014), and are associated with increased risk of serious gastrointestinal, cardiovascular and renal harms (Chou et al. 2011). The risks are higher for oral NSAIDs than for topical NSAIDs (Derry et al. 2016). |
