This code outlines the different techniques for obtaining prostate tissue for diagnostic purposes. The techniques outlined are:

  • Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) guided - A biopsy where a prostate tissue sample is taken from the prostate via a needle which is guided by an ultrasound probe that has been inserted into the rectum.
  • Transperineal - A biopsy where a prostate tissue sample is removed with a thin needle that is inserted through the skin of the perenium.
  • Incidental - Where the biopsy was obtained in a procedure that was not specifically for the purpose of cancer diagnosis, for example a transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP).
