Computation description:Help on this term

(Interim) Number of disability support service users aged 0-64 years with an informal carer, where the service user accessed services to assist the carer in their caring role, in the reporting period divided by number of disability support service users aged 0-64 years with an informal carer in the reporting period.

Computation:Help on this term

R/N x 100

(Interim) where R = number of DS NMDS service users aged 0–64 years with an informal carer, where the service user accessed services to assist the carer in their caring role in the reporting period and N = number of DS NMDS service users aged 0–64 years with an informal carer in the reporting period.

Numerator:Help on this term

Further data development / collection required:Help on this term

The DPRWG has committed to further work to develop a more broadly based (population) measure of support services for carers.  Data development may involve data linkage across administrative data sets.

(Interim) The AIHW will conduct an investigation into the feasibility and data quality of attaching SEIFA to the DS NMDS.

(Interim) Classifications proposed above are appropriate for the current CSTDA/DS NMDS. Classifications will need to be reviewed in line with any future changes to the NMDS.

Note that the existing DS NMDS counts people with informal carers; it does not count carers. The National Disability Data Network has identified improved carer data as a priority area for NMDS redevelopment. Use of DS NMDS data in the interim only provides a proxy measure for this indicator.

Other issues caveats:Help on this term

Available disaggregation depends on sampling errors, confidentiality and other caveats. Cells with numerator counts less than 5 will be suppressed. Numerator and denominator cells will be suppressed, where disaggregated by state/territory (excluding totals).

Information about the Indigenous status of the carer, the country of birth of the carer and the remoteness of the carer is not available from the DS NMDS.

Service users with age in the range 0 to 64 years and service users with ‘not stated’ age are included in calculations for this indicator. Service users with age reported to be 65 years or older are not included.

Treatment of ‘not stated’ values within disaggregation's:

  • Carer age group (years): Total includes carers with ‘not stated’ age.
  • Carer sex: Total includes carers for whom sex could not be derived (from carer relationship to service user).
  • Carer relationship to care recipient/service user: Total includes carers with 'not stated' relationship to care recipient/service user.
  • Age of care recipient/service user: Total includes care recipient/service user with 'not stated' age.
  • Carer primary status: Total includes carers with ‘not stated’ carer primary status.
  • Carer residency status: Total includes carers with ‘not stated’ carer residency status.

Caution is recommended in the use or interpretation of performance at service type level. There is a risk when the service type level data is interpreted in isolation as various service types are complementary and the emphasis on different services reflects jurisdictional policy directions. Potential population estimates in these tables are not necessarily specific to the individual service type.
