Definition:Help on this termThe death of a live birth which occurs during the first 28 days of life. This may be subdivided into early neonatal deaths, occurring during the first seven days of life, and late neonatal deaths, occurring after the seventh day but before 28 completed days of life.

Age at death during the first day of life (day zero) should be recorded in units of completed minutes or hours of life. For the second (day one), third (day two) and through 27 completed days of life, age at death should be recorded in days (WHO 1992).
