Definition:Help on this termThe relationship of a member of an income unit to the reference person in that same income unit. Income units are restricted to relationships of marriage (registered or de facto) and of parent/child under 16 years of age that usually resides in the same household.
Context:Help on this termThe ability to determine relationships between persons residing within the same household is essential in a wide range of statistics on household composition, family type and income unit. It is essential for calculating many of the performance indicators, such as Low income status, and Affordability. It may also be useful in determining possible levels of need and support available for clients.

Prior to 13 March 2018, the definition of the ‘Person’ Object class was ‘A human being, whether man, woman or child’. From 13 March 2018, the definition was edited by removing the words ‘…whether man, woman or child’ so that a person is defined as ‘A human being’. This amendment was undertaken to align the definition of a person with the Australian Government Guidelines on the Recognition of Sex and Gender and the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Standard for Sex and Gender Variables, which recognise that there are sex and gender types that are not exclusively male or female.
