Computation description:Help on this term

The probability of surviving 5 years in people with cancer is divided by the probability of surviving 5 years in the general population (matched on age, sex and calendar year).

Analysis will be undertaken using the ‘period’ method of calculation. See Cancer survival and prevalence in Australia: period estimates from 1982 to 2010.

Presented as a percentage.

2012–16—Nationally, by:

  • sex: males, females and persons
  • cancer type: bowel cancer, lung cancer, melanoma of the skin, female breast cancer, cervical cancer and all cancers combined.

The definitions of the cancer types are as follows: bowel cancer (ICD-10 (2016 version) codes C18–C20), lung cancer (C33–C34), melanoma of the skin (C43), female breast cancer (C50), cervical cancer (C53) and all cancers combined' comprises ICD-10 (2016 version) codes C00–C97, D45–D46, D47.1, D47.3–D47.5, except basal and squamous cell carcinomas of the skin (part of C44).

Northern Territory data for 2016 are not available.
