Computation description: | Body Mass Index (BMI) is calculated as weight (in kilograms) divided by the square of height (in metres). For adults, underweight is defined as a BMI less than 18.5, normal is defined as a BMI of 18.5 to less than 25.0, overweight is defined as a BMI of 25.0 to less than 30.0 and obese is defined as a BMI of greater than or equal to 30.0. For children, underweight is defined as a BMI (appropriate for age and sex) that is likely to be less than 18.5 at age 18, normal is defined as a BMI (appropriate for age and sex) that is likely to be 18.5 to less than 25.0 at age 18, overweight is defined as a BMI (appropriate for age and sex) that is likely to be 25.0 to less than 30.0 at age 18 and obese is defined as a BMI (appropriate for age and sex) that is likely to be greater than or equal to 30.0 at age 18, based on centile curves. See Australian Health Survey: Users' Guide, 2011-13 (ABS cat. no. 4363.0.55.001) for BMI values. Rates are directly age-standardised to the 2001 Australian population. Excludes pregnant women where identified and people with an unknown BMI. Analysis by remoteness and Socio-Economic Indexes for Areas (SEIFA) Index of Relative Socio-Economic Disadvantage (IRSD) is based on usual residence of person. Presented as a percentage. 95% confidence intervals and relative standard errors calculated for rates. |

Comments: | Most recent data available for 2020 National Healthcare Agreement performance reporting: 2017–18 (total population, non-Indigenous: NHS); 2018–19 (Indigenous only: NATSIHS). 2017–18 data are based on measured height and weight, though respondents were also asked to self-report their height and weight. BMI derived from measured height and weight is preferable to that derived from self-reported height and weight. In 2017–18, 33.8% of respondents aged 18 years and over did not have their height or weight measured. For these people, height and weight were imputed using a range of information including their self-reported height and weight. For more information see Appendix 2: Physical measurements in the 2017–18 National Health Survey in National Health Survey: First results, 2017–18 (ABS cat. no. 4364.0.55.001) (ABS 2019) |
