Collection methods: | Jurisdictions that record perinatal data using the ICD-10-AM should apply the following codes, noting that the ICD-10-AM uses a hierarchical coding system for therapy type, and therefore not all types of therapy will necessarily be recorded: 'Code 1 Insulin' is equivalent in the ICD-10-AM to a code in the range O24.1–O24.9 used in conjunction with the fifth character '2' (insulin treated). Note that where a female has Type 1 diabetes, there is no equivalent fifth character applied to the ICD-10-AM code because Type 1 diabetes is always insulin-treated. 'Code 2 Oral hypoglycaemic' is equivalent in the ICD-10-AM to a code in the range O24.1–O24.9 used in conjunction with the fifth character '3' (oral hypoglycaemic therapy). 'Code 3 Diet and exercise' is equivalent in the ICD-10-AM to a code in the range O24.1–O24.9 used in conjunction with the fifth character '4' (other; diet; exercise; lifestyle management). For example, for a female who has pre-existing Type 2 diabetes mellitus and uses oral hypoglycaemic therapy and insulin, this would be coded in the ICD-10-AM as O2412 and would be reported against this data item using Code 1. |
