Description:Help on this term

Number of regular clients who are Indigenous, aged 15 years and over, who gave birth within the previous 12 months and whose smoking status has been recorded within the previous 12 months as one of the following:

  • current smoker,
  • ex-smoker, or
  • never smoked.
Rationale:Help on this term

Smoking during pregnancy is a risk factor for adverse events in pregnancy, and can be associated with low birth weight, pre-term birth, fetal growth restriction, congenital abnormalities and perinatal death. Low birth weight infants are at a greater risk of dying during the first year of life and are prone to ill health in childhood. Smoking during pregnancy is also associated with increased risk of spontaneous abortion and ectopic pregnancy.

Computation description:Help on this term

Count of regular clients who are Indigenous, aged 15 years and over, who gave birth within the previous 12 months and whose smoking status has been recorded within the previous 12 months as one of the following:

  • current smoker,
  • ex-smoker, or
  • never smoked.

‘Regular client’ refers to a client of an Australian Government Department of Health-funded primary health care service (that is required to report against the Indigenous primary health care key performance indicators) who has an active medical record; that is, a client who has attended the Department of Health-funded primary health care service at least 3 times in 2 years.

‘Birth’ includes live births and still births if the birthweight was at least 400 grams or the gestational age was 20 weeks or more.

Operationalisation of smoking status:

Where an Indigenous regular client’s tobacco smoking status does not have an assessment date assigned within the Patient Information Record System (PIRS), smoking status as recorded in the PIRS should be treated as current (i.e. as having been updated within the previous 12 months).

Presented as a number.
