Definition: | For the purposes of the Acute stroke clinical care standard (ACSQHC 2015a), an acute stroke occurs when the supply of blood to the brain is suddenly interrupted. This may result in part of the brain dying, leading to a sudden impairment that can affect a range of activities such as speaking, swallowing, thinking, moving and communicating. In about 80% of people who have a stroke, an artery supplying blood to the brain suddenly becomes blocked (ischaemic stroke). In the remaining 20%, an artery begins to bleed (haemorrhagic stroke) (AIHW 2013). |
