Definition:Help on this term

A narrowly defined group of drugs listed in the Schedule of Pharmaceutical Benefits that are of similar safety and efficacy and provide similar health outcomes, as represented by a code.

Context:Help on this term

Therapeutic groups are defined for the purpose of comparative pricing. The government subsidises all drugs within a therapeutic group up to the level of the lowest priced drug. Any difference between the subsidised price and the price of the drug used by the patient is called the 'therapeutic group premium' and is paid by the patient.

Due to the number of changes to the lists of drugs included in the various therapeutic groups, this value domain is only suitable for use in relation to data for part or all of the 2013-14 financial year.

The Permissible values in this value domain equate to Part numbers in the relevant Determination describing each therapeutic group and the drugs included in each therapeutic group, i.e. the National Health (Pharmaceutical Benefits—Therapeutic Groups) Determination 2010 (PB 1 of 2010) (Cwth).

CODE 1   Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor group

This group includes the following listed drugs:

  • Fosinopril

NOTE: This therapeutic group was removed from the therapeutic groups listed in the Determination by amendment PB 47 of 2013, effective from 1 August 2013. 

CODE 2   Angiotensin II receptor antagonist (ATRA) group

This group includes the following listed drugs:

  • Candesartan, Eprosartan, Irbesartan, Losartan, Olmesartan, Telmisartan, Valsartan

CODE 4   H2 receptor antagonist (H2RA) group

This group includes the following listed drugs:

  • Nizatidine

CODE 5   Proton pump inhibitor (PPI) group

This group includes the following listed drugs:

  • Esomeprazole, Rabeprazole

NOTE: Rabeprazole was removed from this therapeutic group, as listed in the Determination, by amendment PB 23 of 2014, effective from 1 April 2014.

CODE 7   Statins-HP group

This group includes the following listed drugs:

  • Atorvastatin, Rosuvastatin

NOTE: Atorvastatin was removed from this therapeutic group, as listed in the Determination, by amendment PB 77 of 2013, effective from 1 December 2013.

CODE 8   Venlafaxine group

This group includes the following listed drugs:

  • Desvenlafaxine, Venlafaxine

NOTE: Venlafaxine was removed from this therapeutic group, as listed in the Determination, by amendment PB 77 of 2013, effective from 1 December 2013.
