Definition:Help on this term

An indication for an induction being performed to initiate labour in a pregnant female, that is secondary to the main indication but which contributes to the clinician's decision to induce.

Induction of labour is the initiation of labour by artificial means prior to its spontaneous onset. Methods of inducing labour include both pharmacological medication and mechanical or physical approaches.

Induction may be recommended for a number of reasons to protect the health of mother and baby.
