Expulsion from the uterus of an embryo or fetus.

Spontaneous abortions (occurring from natural causes) are an expulsion from the uterus of an embryo or fetus. They are distinguished from preterm births by a gestational age of less than 20 weeks or birthweight of less than 400 grams.

Induced abortions (termination of pregnancy) use artificial means to empty the uterus of a live embryo or fetus.
