Body mass index (BMI) is one method used to estimate total body fat. This helps to determine if weight is within the normal, underweight or overweight ranges.

BMI is calculated by a person's weight in kilograms divided by a person's height in metres, squared.

The BMI of children must be compared against age- and sex-specific charts.
