METEOR identifier: 525842
Registration status:

Description: Prevalence of overweight and obesity among Australians, by Indigenous status.
Rationale: High body mass accounted for 11% of burden of disease in 2003. Obesity is closely associated with risk factors for the main causes of morbidity and mortality among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Indicator set: National Indigenous Reform Agreement (2014) Indigenous, Superseded 24/11/2014

Collection and usage attributes
Population group age from: 18 years

Computation description: Crude rates are calculated for Indigenous Australians. Agestandardised rates are calculated for Indigenous and nonIndigenous Australians. 95% confidence intervals and relative standard errors are calculated for crude and agestandardised rates. Rate ratios and rate differences are calculated for Indigenous:nonIndigenous (using agestandardised rates). Presentation: Number, rate per 100 persons (percentage), rate ratio, rate difference, confidence intervals, and relative standard error. Body Mass Index categories to be reported: obese, overweight, normal, underweight.
Computation: Crude rate: 100 x (Numerator ÷ Denominator). Agestandardised rate: calculated using the direct method with the 2001 Australian population as at 30 June as the standard. Ten year age groups are used from 04 years to 55 years and over to be consistent with estimates published by the ABS. Rate ratio: Indigenous agestandardised rate divided by nonIndigenous agestandardised rate. Rate difference: Indigenous agestandardised rate minus nonIndigenous agestandardised rate.
Numerator: People aged 18 years or over with a Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than 30.00 (obese). People aged 18 years or over with a BMI of 25.0029.99 (overweight). People aged 18 years or over with a BMI of 18.5024.99 (normal range). People aged 18 years or over with a BMI less than 18.50 (underweight).
Numerator data elements:
Denominator: Total populations (Indigenous and nonIndigenous) aged 18 years or over.
Denominator data elements:
Disaggregation: Obese, overweight, normal, underweight. National and state/territory, remoteness, for Indigenous Australians (crude rates). National and state/territory, remoteness, by Indigenous status (agestandardised rates).
Disaggregation data elements:
Comments: Most recent data available for 2014 report: NATSIHS component of the 201213 AATSIHS (Indigenous); The core component of the 201112 AHS (nonIndigenous). Data disaggregated by remoteness to be resupplied for 200405 to provide a comparable time series. New data to be reported by BMI categories (obese, overweight, normal, underweight). At this stage, data are available for persons aged 2 years and over. Data from the AATSIHS are available for remote and very remote areas. The AHS does not cover very remote areas. Baseline year for NIRA target (Close the life expectancy gap within a generation) is 2006; baseline year for this indicator is 200405; target year is 2031.
