Computation description:Help on this term

Rates directly age-standardised to the 2001 Australian population.

Analyses by state and territory, remoteness and Socio-Economic Indexes for Areas (SEIFA) Index of Relative Socio-economic Disadvantage (IRSD) are based on the state or territory and Statistical Local Area (SLA) of the person at the time of their diagnosis.

95% variability bands calculated for rates.

Presented as:

  • a number (for state and territory by cancer type disaggregations)
  • per 100,000.
Computation:Help on this term

100,000 × (Numerator ÷ Denominator)

Calculated separately for each type of cancer.

Numerator:Help on this term

For melanoma, bowel and lung cancer: Number of new cases in the reported year.

For cervical and breast cancer in females: Number of new cases in females in the reported year.

Some disaggregation may result in numbers too small for publication.

Disaggregation by SEIFA and remoteness data are subject to availability of suitable population data.

Comments:Help on this term

Most recent data available for 2014 Council of Australian Governments (COAG) Reform Council (CRC) report: 2010.

2010 data for NSW and ACT will not be available for inclusion and will be estimated for the state and territory by cancer type disaggregation. 2010 estimated data for NSW and ACT will not be disaggregated by Indigenous status, remoteness or SEIFA IRSD quintiles.

2009 incidence data will be resupplied to include incidence rates for NSW and ACT, which were supplied as estimates in the 2013 report.

Note that updated ERP by Indigenous status is not available for this cycle. Data by Indigenous status is calculated using ERP determined prior to the final rebased ERP provided after the 2011 Census. It is expected that final rebased ERP by Indigenous status will be available for the next cycle of reporting.
