Scope:	The scope of the WA Abortion Notification System (WA ANS) is defined by Form 1 of the Regulations for the WA Health Act 1911. The WA ANS holds a digital copy of information provided on Form 1 by Medical Practitioners to the Executive Director, Public Health within 14 days of performing a procedure that is intended to terminate a woman's pregnancy or a fetus of a multiple pregnancy. Details of events for women having miscarriages (spontaneous abortions) or procedures to extract fetuses that have died in utero are not included in this collection.

Collection and usage attributes
Statistical unit:	Each event that terminates a pregnancy. Also each event that terminates one or more fetuses of a multiple pregnancy where pregnancy is expected to continue for one or more other fetuses to be born alive at a later date.
Guide for use:	This DSS specifies the data elements required to be reported by Medical Practitioners by the WA Health Act 1911, and its Regulations. It also describes any relationships with other DSS or Data Elements. The WA Health Act 1911 prohibits identifying information being reported on Form 1 for women having induced abortions. Some demographic data are collected for statistical analysis like pregnancy gestation and maternal age, postcode of residence and indigenous status.
Collection methods:	The Health (Section 335(5)(d) Abortion Notice) Amendment Regulations 2001specify Form 1. Medical Practitioners must complete this form within 14 days for each abortion induced. Original copies of the completed form are submitted to the Department of Health and a copy retained by the Practitioner. Information provided on Form 1 is converted to electronic data through data entry at the Department of Health.
