Funding from the Australian Government allowed for follow-up ear and hearing health services delivered through the Child Health Check Initiative (CHCI) and then the Closing the Gap (CtG) in the Northern Territory National Partnership Agreement. These services were made available to children, aged less than 16 years, in prescribed areas of the Northern Territory from August 2007.

Follow up services were delivered by the NT Department of Health (NT DoH) and Aboriginal medical services.

The CHCI (CtG) Audiology services initially focused on children with audiology referrals from multiple sources including Child Health Checks. If possible and if funding allowed, services were also provided to other children in need of or who sought services.

The audiology services provided under CHCI (CtG) were designed to enable three visits to each community in the Stronger Futures in the Northern Territory (SFNT) prescribed areas, allowing repeated audiology assessments to monitor hearing loss and middle ear function of children in these communities.

Collection and usage attributes

Guide for use:Help on this term

This audiology services dataset is based on version 6 the audiology services form which was implemented between May 2011 to March 2012. The form contains clinical data collected as part of routine healthcare provided by professionals who delivered these services. Earlier versions of the audiology form were in place between August 2007 and April 2011. Although the various versions of the audiology forms have most of the same questions, there are also some key differences, such as:

  • version 1a does not include a question on the Hospital Registration Number (HRN)
  • version 1a and 1b include a question about consent for the provision of data
  • the format of, and response options for, question 4 have changed substantially between the earlier and later versions of the form.

The AIHW only receives confidentialised unit record level information on those children for which consent for data provision to AIHW has been obtained.

1Service event—date of service, DDMMYYYY

DSS specific information:

Date of service follows the standard DD/MM/YYYY format except where not enough detail is provided.  In these instances the following codes should be used:

'Other' :        01/01/1800

'Not stated' : 01/01/1900

Mandatory1
2Audiology assessment client cluster Mandatory1
3Patient—previous audiology assessment indicator, yes/no code N

DSS specific information:

The survey specific question is: "Has the child had a previous audiology check since 11/07/2007?"

In this data element 'unknown' is equivalent to 'unsure' on the collection form.

Mandatory1
4Previous audiology assessment information cluster

Conditional obligation:

Valid for 'yes' response to the question "Has the child had a previous Audiology check since 11/07/2007?"
Conditional1
5Patient—hearing loss indicator, yes/no code N

DSS specific information:

It is possible for 'no hearing loss' to be recorded in two places on the form (level of hearing loss and type of hearing loss).  To streamline this process only one occurrence appears in the DSS.
Mandatory1
6Patient—site of hearing loss, code N

Conditional obligation:

Valid where a 'yes' response to the hearing loss indicator data element is selected.
Conditional1
7Patient—type of hearing loss, code N

Conditional1
8Patient—hearing impairment indicator, yes/no code NMandatory1
9Patient—degree of hearing impairment, code N

Conditional obligation:

Valid where a 'yes' response to the degree of hearing impairment indicator data element is selected.

DSS specific information:

The pure tone thresholds used to identify hearing impairment in the Audiology Services DSS are based on recommendations from Australian Hearing. They differ from the World Health Organization (WHO) standards as data relates only to children.

Coding note: If a hearing impairment measurement is provided for both left and right ear, and it is indicated which measurement relates to which ear, the hearing impairment of least severity is recorded as the response to this question (ie. the response is based on the better ear).

Conditional1
10Patient—middle ear condition indicator, yes/no code NMandatory1
11Patient—middle ear condition type, code N.N

Conditional obligation:

Valid where a 'yes' response to the middle ear condition indicator data element is selected.
