Rationale:Help on this termExcessive alcohol consumption is a major risk factor that contributes to ill health. Of those who drink, Indigenous Australians are more likely to consume alcohol at risky/high risk levels. Reducing the rate at which Indigenous Australians to drink at hazardous levels will assist in closing the gap in life expectancy.

The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) have developed new guidelines on ‘risky’ and ‘high risk’ alcohol consumption.

Mechanisms for reporting annually in between surveys could be explored.

Reliable data on Indigenous adolescents would be useful.
