Registration status:
Health, Standard 07/12/2011 Indigenous, Endorsed 11/09/2012
Description:
Proportion of Indigenous babies born within the previous 12 months whose birth weight has been recorded at the primary health care service.
Rationale:
Low birth weight (newborn babies weighing less than 2,500 grams) is associated with an increased risk of ill health and is related to a higher mortality within the first year of life. Low birth weight is a particular issue for Indigenous Australians. Recording birth weight encourages the provision of appropriate care to limit the negative associations of low birth weight.
