Description:Proportion of adults who are current daily smokers, by Indigenous status.
Rationale:Smoking is a major risk factor that contributes to ill health. Indigenous Australians are twice as likely as non-Indigenous Australians to smoke. Reducing the rate of smoking among Indigenous Australians will assist in closing the gap in life expectancy.

Computation description:

Crude rates/percentage are calculated for Indigenous Australians; age-standardised rates are calculated for Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

Confidence intervals and relative standard errors are calculated for crude and age-standardised rates.

Rate ratios and rate differences are calculated for Indigenous:non-Indigenous.

Presentation: Per 100 persons (percentage).

Computation:100 x (Numerator ÷ Denominator).
Numerator:People aged 18 years and over who smoke tobacco every day.
