Scope: | The Hand hygiene national best endeavours data set (HH NBEDS) aims to support national monitoring of hand hygiene moments in public hospitals. Hand hygiene assists in preventing the spread of infections acquired as a direct or indirect result of health care. The scope for this NBEDS is all public hospitals, including those defined as public psychiatric hospitals in the Local Hospital Networks/Public hospital establishments national minimum data set. All types of public hospitals are included, focusing on acute care and non-acute or subacute care, including psychiatric, rehabilitation and palliative care. |

Guide for use: | The data elements in the HH NBEDS are used to report the results of hand hygiene compliance audits conducted in healthcare establishments as part of the National Hand Hygiene Initiative (NHHI.) The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHC) established the NHHI in 2008 as part of a suite of initiatives to prevent and reduce healthcare-associated infections in Australian healthcare settings. The National Safety and Quality Health Services (NSQHS) Standards (ACSQHC 2022) require health service organisations to have a hand hygiene program consistent with the NHHI and jurisdictional requirements. The NHHI uses a multimodal approach to improving hand hygiene, which includes:
Implementation of the NHHI is led by states, territories and health service organisations (public and private). Compliance audits are undertaken to assess the number of compliant hand hygiene moments observed in relation to the total number of hand hygiene moments The 5 moments for hand hygiene to be audited are:

Collection methods: | Audit data are provided three times a year by health service organisations to the ACSQHC. After its analysis and reporting of the national dataset, the ACSQHC provides the data to the AIHW. Transfer of data from the ACSQHC to the AIHW normally occurs two months after the close of the audit period. The audit periods are from:
