Guide for use: | Impairments of body structure are problems in body structure such as a loss or significant departure from population standards or averages. Impairments are recorded in terms of their extent or magnitude, nature and/or location.Determination of impairment is undertaken primarily by those qualified to evaluate physical and mental functioning or structure according to these standards. This metadata item contributes to the definition of the concept 'Disability' and gives an indication of the experience of disability for a person. CODE 0 More than one region Is recorded when the impairment is present in more than one body location; for example when burn scars affect many areas of skin. CODE 1 Right Is recorded when the impairment is present to the right of the midline of the body when viewed from either the back or the front (sagittal axis). CODE 2 Left Is recorded when the impairment is present to the left of the midline of the body when viewed from either the back or the front (sagittal axis). CODE 3 Both sides Is recorded when the impairment is present on both sides of the midline (sagittal plane) of the body, for example bilateral amputations. CODE 4 Front Is recorded when the impairment is present in front of a line passing through the midline of the body when viewed from the side (coronal plane). CODE 5 Back Is recorded when the impairment is present behind a line passing through the midline of the body when viewed from the side (coronal plane). CODE 6 Proximal Is recorded when the impairment is present nearer the head than a line passing midway between the top of the head and the soles of the feet (transverse plane). CODE 7 Distal Is recorded when the impairment is present nearer the feet than a line passing midway between the top of the head and the soles of the feet (transverse plane). |

Collection Methods: | This coding is used in conjunction with specified body structures, for example 'impairment of proximal structures related to movement'. This code may also be used in conjunction with Impairment extent code X and Impairment nature code X. Impairments should be detectable or noticeable by others or the person by direct observation or by inference from indirect observation. Impairments are not the same as the underlying pathology, but are manifestations of that pathology. Impairments can be temporary or permanent; progressive, regressive or static; intermittent or continuous. The deviation from the population norm may be slight or severe and may fluctuate over time. Impairments may result in other impairments. Impairments may be part or an expression of a health condition, but do not necessarily indicate that a disease is present or that the individual should be regarded as sick. |
